WANTED: American Rodeo Queen at COCA

In 2008, I had the privilege of exhibiting my American Rodeo Queen series at the Center on Contemporary Art (COCA) in Seattle in a show titled WANTED. This body of work was deeply personal—born from my own history as Miss Days of the Old West in 1985, when a dare and a crown set me on a lifelong path of photographing the spirit, grit, and glamour of the American West.

WANTED reimagined the rodeo queen not just as a pageant figure, but as an icon of independence, strength, and allure. Through cinematic portraits and evocative moments, the series cast light on the women who carry the mystique of the West while rewriting its story in their own image.

Looking back, seeing these images gathered together at COCA was a pivotal chapter in my career—a chance to honor both the nostalgia and the myth while inviting viewers to step closer, beyond the sequins and crowns, into the raw power and presence of the women who wear them. My deepest thanks to Joe Roberts and the COCA team for giving WANTED such a powerful stage.
